Online part time job idea 29: create your own online store with Shopify

Savvy readers of already know that I am a huge fan of Shopify due to how simple and quick it is to set up an e-commerce store to easily sell nearly any kind of product. I’ve got a million ideas in my head in related to creating a collection of stores of my own to sell all kinds of products, but unfortunately, there are only 24 hours in the day and I’ve only had the time to get one Shopify store set up and running at the time of this writing.

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As I wrote about a few days ago, I am making over $1000 a month selling a digital product in a Shopify store that pretty much runs itself. As soon as I can free up some time from other projects, I’m definitely going to be creating more digital products and setting up new stores to sell them on. It’s a very lucrative business and I feel like I need to take advantage of it especially now that I’ve quit my corporate job and I’m blogging full-time.

Even if you’ve never run your own e-commerce store before and the thought of setting up a brand new website from scratch gives you heartburn, don’t reach for the Tums quite yet. Shopify has made the process of setting up an online marketplace painfully simple and I had my e-commerce store up and running within 30 minutes.

Shopify Pre-requisites

There’s basically no barrier to entry to starting your own e-commerce store with Shopify, other than having a viable product to sell. As I mentioned before, I’m selling a digital product that I create, and I use the Digital Downloads plug-in to sell them on my store. Most users sell physical products (clothing and jewelry are popular), but Shopify’s powerful selling tools and integrated shipping features make it easy to sell pretty much anything you could imagine.

Shopify Start up costs

The cost to start up a Shopify store of your own will be at least $29 a month, which is the most basic plan they offer at the moment. They do offer more advanced plans, which gives you access to better shipping rates and lower fees. But if you’re just starting out, go for the basic plan and slowly build up to a plan with better features over time. For what it’s worth, I’ve had my store up and running for three years now, and I’m still very happy with my basic $29 a month plan. It just works.

You also have to consider how much it’s going to cost you to source the products that you’re going to sell. If you’re selling your own artwork or digital products that you create (like I do) you’re one step ahead of the game since you won’t have to lay out an investment to purchase inventory.

How much money can you make with Shopify?

Earnings, as expected, are completely unlimited and totally up to you. The amount of money that you will make will be the result of a combination of how useful your product is, as well as how well you market it. Remember, success with any online business requires some marketing efforts (such as Facebook ads or blogging), and without it you’re not likely to do very well.

Create your own shopify store

I’ll be the first to admit that online marketing is not something I excel at, but content creation is where I shine. Knowing this, I decided to start a blog to promote my Shopify store, which has been working very well for me over the years. Basically all I’m doing with the blog is writing detailed articles about the products on my store. Most of my blog traffic comes from Google, which in turn makes it easy for me to send them over to my storefront once I convince them that my product will save them a lot of time and money over the long run. See? The stuff doesn’t have to be complicated!

If you’ve ever wanted to start an online store but have been frozen in fear thinking about how to set it up and get it running, Shopify is the solution for you. As I mentioned earlier, it’s the platform from which I’m going to be launching several other businesses over the next few years, and my plan is to have most of my passive income being generated by that network of e-commerce sites. I have no doubt that I can do it, but it’s just going to take time…
