Online part time job idea 28: Become a YouTube star

Have you ever caught yourself wasting the day away watching videos on YouTube? I’m certainly guilty of that from time to time, but it’s not all that surprising considering the immense variety of content out there on the ‘Tubes.

But let’s take a moment to think about the business side of all this for a moment. When it comes right down to it, there are a ton of seemingly stupid videos on YouTube. But even the weirdest and most oddball content gets views, and those views translate into cash thanks to Google Adsense. It’s probably one of the easiest (and most fun) ways to earn money online while working part time, and the earlier you get started the better.

Need some inspiration? Think about this: there are literally countless examples of people making a living uploading videos to YouTube. I repeat: people are earning a living from the videos they upload to YouTube! And you might be shocked to realize that most of those are just ordinary everyday people who aren’t producing highly technical content. They have simply gained a following of loyal subscribers (which is not difficult to do considering how gargantuan YouTube is) and those subscribers get hooked on that content like they would with favorite TV show. Here are just several examples:

An ordinary kid in his early 20’s earning over $100,000 a year by simply reviewing cars

A new mother recording her family life

A guy goofing around on a BMX bike

And the most incredible example of them all: a guy who records his reactions to video games, and he’s making 7 million dollars a year doing it

In all of these examples, the content isn’t complex and the videos aren’t all that difficult to shoot. Money is being earned through Adsense. The content creators agreed to let Google display advertisements on their videos, and in turn Goggle gives them money for each view. For guys like PewDiePie who get hundreds of thousands of view per video, the money ads up quick!

It’s also interesting to note that Google recently revealed that the number of YouTube channels making six figures is up by 50 percent from this time last year.

So how difficult is it to become a YouTube star these days?

Not difficult at all if you’re willing to put in the effort to create good content.

You need to be a somewhat interesting person. Note that this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be really good in front of the camera! As long as you create videos that people want to see more of, you’ll attract subscribers. Being good looking and charismatic will certainly help, but there are plenty of not-so-attractive and socially awkward individuals making a living uploading videos to YouTube. All you’ll need to succeed is dedication and commitment.

Start up costs
None. Grab your smartphone, record some interesting video, edit it in free video editing software such as iMovie, and upload to YouTube. You should note, however, that it will be much easier to gain subscribers if you use a better camera than a smartphone. This doesn’t mean going out and spending thousands of dollars on a dedicated video camera! As a matter of fact, any decent point-and-shoot camera can shoot stunning HD video these days at a quality much higher than you will get with the phone you have in your pocket.

Potential earnings
The sky is the limit. As described in the examples in this post, some make millions of dollars a year with YouTube alone. That certainly isn’t the norm, however, but it’s not unrealistic to make a comfortable living with YouTube as an online part time job.

YouTube has provided us an incredible opportunity to share our interests and passions with the world at no cost. There are literally millions of people who visit YouTube daily (18 to 49 year olds watch YouTube more than any cable network), and they are all craving fresh new content. Content that you can provide! There’s noting stopping you from creating videos of your own to share with the world, and finding an audience to gobble it up won’t be difficult if you have something interesting to show them.
