A summary of my website empire: Summer 2013

It’s been a long time since I’ve given an update of my web empire. Things are still chugging along nicely, though I haven’t been doing much of anything for the past three months. In that time, I’ve only been actively updating my stock image website with new content (and general site maintenance). The rest of my sites – including this one – have sat idle while I have been tending to that crazy thing called “real life” which consists primarily of family time and my corporate day job. I’ve had very little energy or desire to grow the empire.

But over the past few days, I’ve been thinking: that’s exactly how I want things to be. Remember, I’m all about building passive income here. Being able to step away from my active projects for months at a time – without any loss of web traffic or income – is my ultimate goal. Although I’ve done little to add new content or promote any of my websites since May, traffic has been dependably steady across the board – there haven’t been any noticeable increases or decreases in traffic on any of my web properties. That’s kind of reassuring, don’t you think? This leads me to believe that there is really no need to be a slave to your blogs to keep the traffic flowing. From what I’ve seen, as long as you have good content, you’ll have a steady stream of visitors. Of course that can be spiked by spending every hour of every day by promoting the living hell out of your project, but at that point, it’s not really passive income anymore.

As long as I have a corporate job, I know that there is very little hope of me being able to spend the time that I’d like to get all my websites where I want them to be. There just aren’t enough hours in the day. But my realization over the past few days has led me to believe that this website empire of mine is just something I need to chip away at day by day – little by little – and it’ll naturally grow over time. I may go on a binge and add tons of content to all of them at one time, or I may not do anything at all for months. I will focus on quality over quantity (like I always have) and not let these websites control me.

I know that’s much easier said than done, but it’s reality.
