I recently wrote about my frustrations with my current portfolio of online businesses, and looking back on it now, I’m glad that I wrote it all out. It shows how frustrating running a business can be and also how being so unfocused is getting me nowhere fast. I admit that my approach to online business over the past couple years has been “throw a bunch of crap up on the wall and see what sticks” – and I’m realizing now that the method is a complete waste of time. I feel overwhelmed, and I need focus.
Since I wrote that post, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research to in order to find out why I’m not achieving the results I want. Long story short, I discovered an online business guru named Pat Flynn who makes a living doing this stuff. His methods are clear, precise, and actionable – compared to mine which are weak and have no clear goal (other than to make money).
One of his most interesting projects over the past year or so has been what he referred to as “The Niche Site Duel”. Basically, he and Tyrone Shum challenged each other to see who could build a more successful niche site. Pat outlined each of his steps in great detail on his blog – right from the very beginning to the end, where he was making $1700/mo in advertising income. All of this happened in less than a year.
I may be late to the game, but I want to do this challenge too. It’s going to be a lot of hard work, but I want to see if I can do it. And just like Pat did, I’ll document my progress (success and failures) here on this blog for all to see.
The one constraint:
Just like Pat, I want 100% organic and natural traffic. I’m not going to pay for it.
To build a niche site that brings in significant monthly income. I’m not going to throw out a specific dollar amount as a target, because I honestly have no idea what is possible here. Like I said, this is a total experiment.
Whenever I reach an important milestone (or setback), I’ll write an update providing as much detail as possible. There will be at least one update per month, but probably more because behind swing trading, this will be my primary focus.
I need to find a niche, which means I need to get busy doing some keyword research. I’ve built a lot of websites in the past, but I’ve never done extensive research on keywords and search volumes. This time, I’m going to do it right…
Here we go!
