So now that I’m officially on the path to quit my corporate job and make a living earning passive income from the internet, I decided one of the first steps I needed to take was to formalize some of my websites. The stock image store is my largest and most profitable site at the moment, and I’ve been using a name for it that I created since 2006 without any sort of legal Trademark protection. This exposed me to a handful of small risks, most important being the possibility of someone swooping in and taking the name out from under me. That wouldn’t be good at all, especially since I have worked so hard establishing it as a well-known brand name in the stock photo world.
Trademarking the name would protect it in any legal situation, and I wouldn’t have to worry about anyone infringing on it.
I did a lot of research on the process of applying for a Trademark, and one of the best websites that I found for summarizing the information was legalzoom.com. My first impression of the website was that it’s basically organized in a “legal information for dummies” sort of way, and my non-lawyer brain was able to quickly absorb the information to compare the different options for my trademark. They really make it easy, and I finished the whole trademark application process in less than 15 minutes.
The only downside to legalzoom.com is that they are a little bit pricey, and they push hard with the up-sell during the checkout process. I could have filed my trademark application directly with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for less money, but legalzoom was more comfortable for me because they explained every step of the process in a painfully simple way. That’s worth paying a little extra to me any day of the week.
