A summary of my website empire

At the time of this writing, I have 7 fully developed websites. Well, one of them is actually broken up into two completely different parts (under the same domain), so it’s 6 if you want to get technical. I know, that’s hardly enough to call an “empire”. But since I haven’t described any of this before, allow me to give you a short introduction and an update on each:

Website 1: To be referred as the “car drawing website” from this point forward

This is a niche site that I built to help people who want to learn about drawing cars. I’ve been drawing cars ever since I was a wee lad, so this is a natural topic for me. Anyway, I started it in 2011, and it’s still rather small at the moment getting very little traffic and earning very little money (via Adsense). This is a very focused website with a clear understanding of my target keyword(s) – there isn’t much left to figure out with this site, the framework is set up and ready to go, so the only thing I need to do is start developing content. The primary income source will be Google Adsense.

Website 2: To be referred to as the “airplane blog” from this point forward

I also have a pretty deep interest in travel and commercial aviation, so I built a niche site two years ago focused around that. The problem is that I’ve been lazy with it and I have no idea what my target keywords are. Apparently Google doesn’t either because traffic is pretty minimal at this point and I need to do something about it! I’m still not sure how I want to monetize this website, but I do know that it will either be through Adsense or affiliate links.

Websites 3 and 4: To be referred to as my “stock Image website” from this point forward.

This is my main project at the moment, considering that I’ve made over $100k selling stock photos since 2006. This website is broken up into two sections: a blog (where I post free samples and general commentary), and a fully functional e-commerce store where I sell all my images with royalty-free licenses at multiple resolutions. At the time of this writing, my thought is that this website will continue to be my largest source of web income, but I admit that I’m having doubts about it’s longevity. The stock photo market in general is become heavily diluted and I’m seeing my earnings decline year after year despite my continued effort to keep it going strong. Another thing that adds a little salt into the wound is that my web traffic for this site is declining severely as well – no matter how hard I try and promote it.

Website 5: To be referred to as the “design element blog” from this point forward

This website is actually an un-planned spinoff from the stock image website I mentioned above. While spending years producing content for that website, I ended up with a lot of unused and “leftover” graphic files that I didn’t know what to do with. So I created this design element blog to offer them free to anyone who wants them – and I’m seeing nice gains in my visitor traffic month after month. I have no plans to monetize this website – it’s primary purpose is to drive traffic to my store.

Website 6: To be referred to as the “PowerPoint template” website from this point forward

I guess you could consider this a spinoff of my stock image website too, but I did spend a LOT of dedicated time creating exclusive content for this one a few years ago. It’s basically a website that offers free PowerPoint templates that I made, and it’s primary purpose is to generate Adsense income. I haven’t touched this website in three years, but it’s completely on autopilot making roughly $30 a month in income. Not a lot, but not bad considering that I don’t have to lift a finger to earn that money.

So as you can see, I’ve got quite the little “web empire” going on here. Some I spend more time on than others, and that usually changes depending on what kind of mood I’m in and what I feel like working on. But now that my goal is to break free of the corporate life and gain financial independence, it’s time to get serious and crank things up a notch.
