Use Facebook and Twitter to promote your online part time job

Over the course of your entire life you’ve probably heard the term “if you build it, they will come”. The problem is, that’s not exactly a realistic description of the way things work in the real world. Building your business is simply not good enough in this day and age – and as a matter of fact, that’s only half the battle! Your online part time job will need to be heavily promoted and advertised if you want to be successful, and it’s important to think as much about that as you do about the job itself.

Promoting your online business isn’t that hard to do. Facebook and Twitter make it easy. Here’s how:

  • Create an account at both of these social networks
  • Post daily updates on interesting things related to your online job.
  • You’ll want to gain as many natural (real) followers as possible, so make sure what you post is useful and interesting. DO NOT buy followers! Doing so will increase your follower count, but not the kind that will engage with your posts. You’ll never hear from them again, which is not what you want.
  • Engage with others! Follow others who share your same interests, and those who you think could be potential clients.
  • Comment on their status updates, and ask questions.
  • Over time, you’ll develop a valuable network of customers – and friends.

One of the biggest advantages to using Facebook and Twitter to promote your online part time job is that you will have to do less and less of it as time goes on. Why? Because you’ll eventually benefit from “compounding sharing”. In other words, other people will start sharing your information for you naturally – without you having to make an effort to do so. It works like this:

  1. You promote your online part time job heavily with Facebook and Twitter for 6 months to a year. If most of your posts and status updates have links back to your website or blog, that’s a lot of links floating out there for people to discover.
  2. If your online job is interesting enough, people will naturally share your links with others in their own social circle. And those people will share them again in their social circle. And again…
  3. This cycle continues over and over until your links are shared by the hundreds every day – without you actually having to do anything! Of course it’s not wise to disappear completely from Facebook and Twitter once this happens, because it will send the message that you are no longer active in your online job. But you won’t have to be as active as you were in the beginning.

It should be noted, however, that your online part time job needs to be really interesting or beneficial to others to get the maximum effect of link sharing.

In the beginning, you should be spending an equal amount of time promoting your online part time job through Facebook and Twitter as much as you do working on the job itself. There’s no point in working so hard on the actual business if nobody knows about it! So get active, get social, and start spreading the word about your products and services ASAP.
